Old OS Town Plans of Manchester

  • For a few areas of Liverpool and Manchester we have also reprinted some of the very early Five-foot plans. Originally published at a scale of 1:1056 or 5 feet to the mile, we have reduced them in scale to 1:1760 or a Yard to the Mile. The maps, though covering quite a small area, are quite wonderfully detailed, showing such features as capstans and mooring posts, lamp-posts, the layouts of back yards, and even the interior of certain buildings such as churches. For the urban historian they are perhaps the most fascinating maps ever published by the Ordnance Survey.

  • Here are the details of maps for Hulme (East):

  • Manchester Sheet 38 Hulme 1844 - published 1995; intro by Chris Makepeace. ISBN.978-0-85054-726-9

This extremely detailed map covers a major part of Hulme, an area now changed out of all recognition, but described then by Engels as "one great working people's district....the more thickly built-up regions chiefly bad and approaching ruin, the less populous of more modern structures, but generally sunk in filth". Coverage stretches from Clopton Street eastward to Ormond Street, and from River Street southward to Warde Street. Apart from the many streets of terraced housing, features include Zion Chapel, Chorlton upon Medlock Workhouse, Trinity Church, Medlock Street Glass Works, Scotch Church, St Wilfrid's RC Chapel. On the reverse we include street directory entries for Chester Street, Clarendon Street, Duke Street, George Street, Great Jackson Street, Medlock Street, Owen Street.

The map links up with Manchester Sheets 33 Oxford Street to the north, 37 Hulme St Georges to the west, 39 Chorlton on Medlock to the east.
