We have published just the one map in Nairnshire, taken from the OS 1:2,500 maps and reduced to approx 14 inches to the mile. Each covers an area of a mile by a mile and a half, and shows the area in great detail, including individual buildings. Maps are available through our On-line Mapshop. Nairn was developed into a seaside resort in the mid 19th century; it was described as "The Brighton of the North". This was largely due to Dr John Grigor who built or encouraged the Marine Family Hotel, where many of his patients stayed for the fresh air; and the Nairn Sea Water Swimming Baths. By 1875 there were six horse drawn bathing machines on the beach. Earlier the construction of a harbour had been less successful, as Thomas Telford's designs were modified. It was badly damaged in severe floods in 1829.
