OLD ORDNANCE SURVEY MAPS: THE GODFREY EDITION

May Newsletter

Welcome to our May Newsletter.

On Saturday 5th June we will have a stand at the Sunderland History Fair, at the Seaburn Centre, Sunderland, 10am until 4pm. We hope to see some of you there.

When faced by the news that we haven't published a particular map, or have not reprinted it, callers sometimes ask whether we can "run one off". Well, leaving aside the amount of time spent in researching the historical notes etc, quite a lot of other work goes into preparing the maps.

When we started back in 1981, the maps were almost all printed by Peterson Printers at South Shields, and they continued to print many of the maps until that firm's closure in the early 21st century. However, by then Graham Fielding, who had been involved with the maps from the beginning, had left to set up his own firm, Field Print, and he was joined by others from Peterson Printers. This team continues to print all our maps, now of course including several colour printed maps, and these photographs give an insight into their factory as the maps are prepared.

I normally do the spotting of the negatives at our base. Here Graham Fielding is shown putting some finishing touches; while Clive prepares the artwork - notes, directory, cover photo - for film. And we are ready to roll!

The printing is done by Scott and Bede, here seen checking that all is well.

And, after going through the folding machine, we have a finished map.
