Old Ordnance Survey Inch to the Mile Maps

  • These maps normally cover an area of about 18 miles by 12 miles and are especially good at showing railways, roads and canals, and at giving a broad view of a wider area. Each includes an introduction and a more detailed map of a small town or village. They are available through our On-line Mapshop

  • Here is information about Sheet 138:

  • One Inch Sheet 138 North Shropshire Plain 1904 - published 2002; intro by Derrick Pratt. ISBN.978-1-84151-377-5

This One Inch to the Mile map covers the north Shropshire area around Wem, with a tiny portion of Flintshire intruding at the top. Coverage stretches from Ellesmere, in the top left corner, eastward to Little Drayton and Child Ercall, and southward to Hadnall and Crudgington. On the reverse is a detailed map of the strangely named village of Ruyton of the XI Towns (or Ruyton-in-the-Eleven-Towns) complete with directory, once a borough town.

It is not possible to list the many hamlets, farmsteads and other topographical features shown on these maps. However, you may find it useful if we list the towns and principal villages or church parishes that are included on this map. Links are given for those for which detailed large-scale maps are also available.

  • Flintshire: Bettisfield
  • Shropshire: Albrighton, Baschurch, Bomere Heath, Cherrington, Child Ercall, Clive, Cockshutt, Ellesmere, Great Ness, Grinshill, Hadnall, Hodnet, Little Ness, Loppington, Middle, Preston Gubbals, Ruyton of the XI Towns, Shawbury, Stanton upon Hine Heath, Stoke upon Tern, Waters Upton, Welshampton, Wem, Whixall.
